Summary
It is often unbelievable the amount of time that comedian Jim Gaffigan is able to spend talking about things that are inherently unfunny. What is more amazing is how entertaining it can be. His rant on how much he loves ketchup is a perfect example of proof that he is funny enough to be entertaining regardless of what he happens to be talking about. Gaffigan even has a conversational way of getting his comedy out that makes it seem as though he is creating it onstage, but the speed and accuracy with which he transfers from bit to bit is further proof of his hard work. Gaffigan’s “Beyond the Pale” tour was a huge success, and this tour ended in a sold out performance in Austen, filmed for this special. Most comedians released on DVD after a Comedy Central special have the bonus of providing an uncensored version of the act, but Gaffigan is not the type of performer that requires this. He is extremely humorous without ever needing to be too edgy or offensive. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t perks to make the purchase of the special on DVD worthwhile, but they are in the special features rather than the main show. The special features on the disc include three episodes from Gaffigan’s Emmy-nominated “Pale Force” show, and four brief webisodes from his internet show, “Our Massive Planet.” There are mildly amusing, with many other interviews with more of the comedian’s bits.
